why do period cramps get so much worse when you get an iud? I got my iud four months ago and every month I still get a period, but the cramps are next level painful.

There is a foreign physical device inside your uterus, it sounds reasonable that the contractions of uterine muscles are squeezing it and may cause more pain. I would assume that the position and angle of your uterus and/or IUD also matters. If you have the copper IUD, then your body could be reacting to the metal and/or the increased amount of prostaglandins. If it's still severe after a few months or you experience other symptoms also, I would recommend talking to your doctor.

Each bc gives you diff side effects. I got the kyleena iud in April. I am experiencing more cramps when I never use to experience them on the nuvaring. You could also be adjusting to having it. @xNymphadora does have great points as well. If you got a bigger iud that could be the cause as well. The kyleena is smaller. If it’s very bothersome talk to your dr.

I had the kyleena for five years, it took some adjustment but then my periods went away completely after a few months. I never had issues after that. I know that the copper IUD makes you more prone to painful periods, maybe bring this up with your doctor if you’re feeling like you can’t deal with it :(
